How to Make Industry Events Worth Your Time

Whether it’s a big business expo or a local networking breakfast, industry events can be a goldmine — or a total time sink. As a family-run business, we’ve been to our fair share over the years, and in our new podcast Business with the Donnos, we’re spilling the tea on what really makes them worth it.

Here are a few of the lessons we’ve learned from attending events (sometimes chaotic, always memorable!) — and how you can make the most of them too.

1. Go In With a Goal

If you just show up and hope for the best, you’ll likely walk away with a tote bag and not much else. Whether your aim is to find a new supplier, meet potential clients, or simply learn something new, decide why you’re going and plan around it.

2. Do Your Homework

Before the event, take 10 minutes to scan the speaker list, sessions, and exhibitor map. Highlight who you want to meet and where you want to be. Bonus tip: connect with a few attendees or speakers on LinkedIn beforehand — you’ll feel much more confident saying hello.

3. Talk to Strangers (Even if You’re Shy!)

We know, easier said than done. But events are one of the rare times when everyone is open to a chat. Whether it’s over coffee or waiting for a session to start, take the chance to talk to someone new. Some of our best business moments have started with a simple “Hi.”

4. Take Notes (and Photos!)

Don’t rely on memory. Jot down key insights, people you meet, or even ideas that come to you during a talk. Snap a few photos too — they’re great for social media and internal reflection.

5. Follow Up Fast

Met someone interesting? Heard a brilliant idea? Don’t wait a week. Send a quick LinkedIn message or email while the conversation is still fresh. It turns a chat into a connection.

Bonus Tip: Listen to Our Podcast

In Episode 2 of Business with the Donnos, we talk all about attending industry events — the good, the bad, and the slightly awkward. It’s honest, it’s funny, and we hope it helps other business owners feel a bit more prepared (and a lot less alone).
